JLL Minneapolis – St. Paul Snapshots:
Minneapolis-St. Paul’s manufacturing sector continues to see Y-O-Y job gains

Manufacturing Employment

• According to the most recent BLS estimates, manufacturing employment in the Minneapolis-St.
Paul metro has grown 2.1% since March 2016. The region has seen positive year-over-year
(YO-Y) job gains every month since 2010. March employment numbers in the manufacturing
sector haven’t been this large since 2008.
• While some recent manufacturing layoffs have been making the news lately, there is a larger
story in the slow but steady growth of employment within more advanced manufacturing firms. In
an economy with a substantial life sciences cluster, much of the production-related job growth is
occurring among medical technology manufacturers. We anticipate net positive Y-O-Y
manufacturing job growth will continue through 2017.
